Memories of mischief - the old days on the internet

the internet, last frontier. i remember when it came out, there was no authority or enforcement of anykind. There was only a few basic HTML web sites and there was no banners or ads. It took a couple of years before they successfuly started taking credit card transactions and all of a sudden all the web sites turned into advertising billboards. After the mainstream ISP's like compuserv and prodigy actually let their members type in their own IP addresses for ftp sites it let the cat out of the bag. There was people looking for porn all over the place. We used a simple algorhythm to generate fake numbers which we used to make hundreds of AOL accounts. We would log on to AOL and go to their chat rooms and talk shiiiiit aka troll. AOL would ban one account you just log in as another and go back to the same room and talk shiaaaat. AOL finally got a real card checking machine and the fun was over for a while till some kids figured out new generators which would spit out valid numbers. Doing that sort of a thing now is serious crime but in 1992 there was hardly any definition of what it was that we were doing. Most judges and police departments were trying to figure out how to plug the typewriter thingie into the television.
